your practice, your choices

Privacy and your data

You can practice without creating an account. This page explains what is stored when you use YesTyping and what changes if you sign in or allow optional ads.

Effective and last reviewed:

Practice in your browser

Typing preferences and recent test results are stored in your browser so they can be available on your next visit. This local storage is tied to the browser and device you use. Clearing this website’s storage in your browser removes that local data.

The interactive starter course stores only which lessons you have completed. The practice line stays in the page while you type and is not saved in browser storage or sent to the service. You can reset lesson completion from the course page. If browser storage is unavailable, lesson progress lasts only while the page remains open.

Typing input is processed in the page to calculate results. The results service accepts test metrics and progress samples; it does not require your custom practice passage.

The repeat-word suggestion compares missed words already present in up to 20 recent saved result summaries for the selected language. The comparison runs in this page; it does not collect keystrokes or send a separate recommendation request. If you are signed in, result summaries may already sync to your account as described below.

Optional accounts

Creating an account sends your display name, email address, and password to the service. The server stores your account details and a salted password hash, rather than a readable copy of your password. Your email is used to identify your account when you sign in.

While signed in, the service can save your preferences and test results. Saved results include the test mode, language, duration, speed, accuracy, character counts, timestamps, and speed samples used for the results graph, and words you missed for repeat practice. Saved preferences can include your custom practice text.

Public community scores

Eligible saved results may appear on community leaderboards with your display name, typing speed, accuracy, and the date of the result. Your email address and password hash are not included in leaderboard responses. Choose a display name you are comfortable making public.

Session cookies

Signing in to YesTyping sets a session cookie. It keeps your browser signed in for up to 30 days unless you sign out or the session is removed earlier. The cookie is marked HttpOnly so page scripts cannot read it. Signing out removes the active session cookie and invalidates that session on the server.

Optional advertising

Advertising is optional. When ads are available, the advertising area asks you to allow them for the current visit. The Google AdSense script loads only after that choice. You can continue practicing without allowing ads.

Once enabled, Google’s advertising services may use cookies and process information such as your IP address, browser details, and ad interactions. See Google’s explanation of advertising technologies and Google’s privacy policy for details and controls. Third-party cookies already placed in your browser are managed through your browser or the provider’s settings.

Hosting and security

Requests to the website and service expose connection information, including your IP address, to the hosting infrastructure. Hosting providers may maintain operational and security logs. The service also uses request limits to reduce abuse.

Keeping and clearing your data

Browser data remains until it is replaced, cleared through the interface, or removed in your browser settings. Account information and saved results remain on the server until they are removed. Expired sessions can no longer authenticate requests.

Clearing your saved history removes your saved results, including those used for community rankings. Removing browser data alone does not remove server data. Signing out does not delete your account.

You can delete your account from the account menu by confirming your current password. This removes your account, saved settings, results, and active sessions from the service. Browser preferences on other devices and any hosting backups are separate.
