Count letters, numbers, punctuation, and spaces as character keystrokes. This estimate uses the standard convention of five characters per word.
Typing tests conventionally treat five characters as one word, including spaces and punctuation. This calculator uses (character keystrokes − incorrect keystrokes) ÷ 5 ÷ elapsed minutes for adjusted WPM.
Raw WPM is all character keystrokes ÷ 5 ÷ elapsed minutes. Accuracy is the percentage of those character keystrokes that were correct.
If you type 250 character keystrokes in 60 seconds and five are incorrect, your raw speed is 50 WPM. The remaining 245 correct keystrokes produce 49 adjusted WPM and 98% accuracy.
A manual calculator only knows the totals you provide. The one-minute typing test measures elapsed time from the first keystroke, compares each character with the target, records corrected errors for accuracy, and shows consistency over the attempt.
Use the same duration, language, punctuation, and difficulty when comparing sessions. A short test can be useful for a warm-up, while a longer test says more about sustained control. Look at accuracy with speed rather than treating WPM as the only measure of progress.
